How To Be A Better Tweeter

Realizing my last round of Twitter research left my Twitter followers wondering what was wrong with me, I thought it would be a good time to perform research that they actually valued. It wasn’t easy. My desire to add more followers, at all costs, consumes me.

But this time, I think I succeeded. Instead of trying to find ways to add more followers through dodgy practices, I’ve researched ways to add more value to Twitter and become a better tweeter.

The Sweet Retweet
Although it’s a relatively new practice, retweeting is an outstanding way to improve your standing on Twitter.

Has one of your followers updated their Twitter stream with an interesting article they found somewhere on the Web? If so, don’t just read the story and go about your day, retweet it! I’ve found that when I do so, most of my followers will do the same and in the process, some add my username to their own update, exposing me to their entire list of followers.

Not all articles are created equal, though, so you need to make sure that the message you’re retweeting is something your followers actually care about. I learned the hard way: it turns out my followers really don’t care about horseback riding in Moscow.

To retweet, the accepted practice is to copy the original text into your own Twitter post and prefix it with "RT" or "Retweet" and the originator’s name. For example: "RT @donreisinger: I resubscribed to the NY Post last week. Delivery was supposed to begin on Jan. 31. I have YET to receive a paper."

Sorry, but no one cares about your dinner
There’s a common complaint, made especially by those who don’t like Twitter, that too many people use the service to tell the world about things no one cares about. Usually, I think that’s ridiculous. But sometimes, I find a few updates like that and realize that maybe those folks aren’t so far off.

Look, it’s nothing personal and believe it or not, I really care what you say, but I couldn’t care less about what you had for dinner last night or how delicious your chicken salad sandwich is. I’d much rather see it filled with retweets and other interesting tidbits of information that the vast majority of users actually care about.

You’re probably wondering how I know that it doesn’t make you a better Tweeter. Unfortunately, I learned my lesson not long ago. The hard way.

Reply. A lot.
I like to talk. I’ll even admit that I like to hear myself talk. As a Twitter user, that’s sort of a problem.

Believe it or not, followers actually want to believe that you’re listening to them. I know, I know, it’s not all that easy and sometimes it’s hard not to laugh at the dumb tweets, but you need to exercise restraint and realize that Twitter is a community where people want to have a conversation.

I had some trouble with that. And if you look at my recent updates, it seems I still do. But I’m getting better. I now realize that people on Twitter don’t want to just hear what others have to say, they want to be heard. And the best way to satisfy that desire is to reply to their interesting tweets.

Find interesting stuff and post
You know when I told you that you should retweet interesting updates you see in your stream? That’s lazy. You really need to be a proactive user. Go out and find neat articles and post them in your Twitter stream for others to enjoy. Maybe they’ll retweet your update and you will be exposed to a slew of new people who want to know all about you.

I did it on a few occasions and it worked beautifully. It turns out many of my followers really enjoy tech talk and discussions on sports. Whenever I find a good article on those topics, I post it on Twitter and more often than not, my followers retweet my update.

It’s OK to say nothing
Just because there’s a big box beneath a "What are you doing?" message in Twitter, it doesn’t mean that you need to say anything.

I’m not quite sure why we all get the urge to update as often as possible, but we need to realize that updates from scripts are a waste of everyone’s time.

Look, I’m really happy to hear about your life and what’s going on, but I don’t need to be inundated with items you’re adding to Google Reader or songs currently playing on your computer. Maybe someone cares, but when I see my stream being overrun with automatic updates, it annoys me. Don’t do it. Please.

Use hashtags
Have something interesting to say on a topic that’s hot on Twitter right now? Make sure you use hashtags — keywords preceded by the hash sign, "#". Over the past few months, hashtags have become a great way for other users to find content quickly.

Hashtags basically create groupings on Twitter that combine content of the same topic. It sounds simple, but whenever you have something really interesting to say about a topic that’s hot on Twitter or Twitter Search, it doesn’t hurt to place a hashtag after your tweet. It helps others find your update that aren’t following you and exposes you to new people who might like what you have to say.

It’s more than text
Have you ever taken pictures and uploaded them to a service like Twitpic so you could post it in your Twitter stream? If you haven’t, your followers are missing out.

Sending pictures is a great way to add more value to Twitter and make you a better Tweeter. Let’s face it: who really wants to look at text all day? Your followers might actually like pictures better than your regular updates.

That’s why I’ve uploaded pictures from my wedding. It turns out my followers would rather see pictures of my wife than hear what I have to say.

And now, you’re a better Tweeter. You don’t have to thank me. Just follow me. Why not? You know what you’re getting: a user that retweets your interesting articles, won’t talk about his dinner, listens to you, finds interesting stuff for you, doesn’t spam you, uses hashtags, and uploads pictures.

This article is not about the basics of twitter as I assume that would be boring for most of you. By now you have heard of Twitter, whether you use it regularly or not. Millions of people are using it and it seems to be taking the world by storm quickly. Celebrities and politicians are even using it to get their messages across, sometimes instead of the time tested press conference. Imagine how many Twitter messages was created during Michael Jackson’s Memorial Service. Probably multi-millions if not billions.

Times have changed and so have the tools that we use. Twitter is a simple tool yet can be used in profound ways. As a tool of communication it can be used to create relationships in a digital world that could not be done any other way. From a business perspective this is vital in a business world that is becoming dominated by SEO, PPC, e-mail marketing, e-books and newsletters, social media like YouTube and so much more. There is one key to using Twitter as a money making tool and it is not very complicated to use it.

At first I was skeptical and ignored the shear brilliance of using Twitter. I had an account but never checked it and even coined a new term called Twunk. As in Twunk Mail, or junk mail on Twitter.

I found it annoying to use and felt that the next generation of this application will be a new and improved technology and hopefully we would not have to wait too long for it. Then I started to see everyone using it in a truly intelligent way. It was a great way to build what is known as a list. Not just any list, but a list of targeted followers that are somewhat interested in what you may have to say.

Now not everyone on Twitter follows it or what you have to say but where else can you tap into 20,000 people that might be interested in your product or service on any given day. Now if you do not have anything worthwhile to say then a puppy dog wouldn’t follow you. Don’t worry, most of what this tool is useful for is learnable if you have the desire.

You can create a large following and then start to develop relationships. I know some of you reading this may not have a product or service yet but creating relationships does not require any of this to start. If there is one thing you should remember is that a targeted list is the starting point of all business online.

This is not only possible but can be done by anyone that is willing to put in the 1000 effort. Let me stop you here. If you think it is a get rich quick scam then don’t waist your time. You will not make any decent money because social media helps you as much as it exposes you. On the other hand, if you are willing to learn and put in the effort then you will create a significant following on Twitter that can be turned into cash.

There is a system that is well known and I am finally able to share it with you. Remember, this is the one system that is being used by professionals and online business owners, network marketers, companies with product launches, politicians, celebrities, etc.

WARNING: when you look at some of the presentations do not be fooled as I was for 6 months. The internet teachers and gurus are the new rich and do not care about whether you dress in a suit or flip flops. How Twitter Can Increase Your Affiliate Checks

Did you know you can increase your affiliate income by using the Web 2.0 tool named Twitter in your marketing and affiliate efforts?

I will come to the "how to make money" part shortly, but first I will tell you a little bit about the phenomenon Twitter, in case you haven’t heard about it before or are unsure of exactly what’s going on.

Imagine the coffee machine or lunch restaurant at your workplace. The place most people meet up and share both gossip and work discussions. Then you have an understanding of what twitter is about. It’s a gathering point for a lot of people online. It’s a dialog between people and as you will discover shortly it opens fantastic opportunities both socially and for business. And you don’t need a website, blog or marketing funds. It’s all free.

So how do you make money from Twitter? As you soon will see links are a big and natural part of the conversations going on in Twitter. People are also much more inclined to click your links in Twitter than for example in email marketing, links on websites or blogs. And it will also take you very little time to write your Twitter messages. I spend about a minute to write a twitter message.

So, I just told you why you can make money. Now let’s look at the how…

Step 1, sign up to twitter. Go to twitter.com and create a new account. This will take you a couple of seconds.

Step 2, sign up to a bunch of twitters. You find Twitters in twitter. The process is very simple and you will understand it as soon as you have tried. The easiest way to find interesting Twitters are through people that are already authorities in your marketplace and other interest areas. Authors, bloggers and so on.

Twitters you may find interesting to follow: @gillberg, @colligan, @SoftwareGuide (this is an example of a business twitter with messages related to software).

My initial tests suggest you can get a ratio about one to 5, e.g. for every 5 people you follow one will follow you. And if you follow me, I will follow you

Step 3, after signing up and subscribing to a few Twitters it’s time to set up your account. For people to sign up to follow you it’s important that you have a short bio and if you have a website or blog, include a link too.

This should help you get a higher ratio of followers and the followers will also be more targeted. Say you are interested in affiliate marketing. If likeminded people see you in Twitter and check out your bio they are more likely to subscribe to your Twitter messages.

When setting up the account I recommend you use a picture of yourself. This will make you more trustworthy and human.

Step 4, listen to the communication. Twittering is pretty straight forward process, but it’s good to get a feel for the general communication.

And finally, step 5 — time to start twittering.

Some Twitter tips.

* Be personal. Tell people a little bit about yourself, this will make you more human and trustworthy.
* Use mystique to get the click. For example; Check this out: [link], Wow, this is cool: [link] and so on. I think you get the picture.
* When it’s appropriate, interact with other Twitters using the reply button.
* Share valuable information, if you spam you will end up without anyone reading your posts pretty soon.
* Don’t talk about yourself too much.
* Use tracking for your links. Use klikdeal (klikdeal.com) for example to set up your twitter links. This will pretty soon give you an overview of what is being clicked and what’s not. Avoid tinyurl as this doesn’t give you tracking capabilities.

An increasing number of my SEO clients are now evangelizers of Twitter. However, many are still not big fans. Yesterday a client sent me a link to a recent Nielson report which indicates that ‘more than 60 percent of U.S. Twitter users fail to return the following month.’

Well, she didn’t mention the report also says it might be jumping the gun because Twitter’s 40% retention rate is already quite decent compared with other start-ups. 1. Complete Your Business Profile

If I talk about something like Twitter for business, anything Twitter related is usually quite hot because my Twitter followers are in the marketing field. As a result, they have three times the number of click-throughs.

Twitter makes knowing what your followers want a precise science. You don’t really have to guess.

Basically, if there’s a higher response rate to a particular tweet, then you now know to write tweets of a similar nature and on a similar topic.

That’s why Twitter is one of the best personal branding enhancement tools in the world, using Twitter business principles you’ll become an authority and maven in your subject in no time.

How To Twitter: A Guide to Tweeting on Twitter. First of all the right way to say it is How To Use Twitter or How To Tweet. Step 1 – learning the vocabulary of Twitter is complete.

Twitter is not like Facebook. It’s not a page with pictures, notes, walls or videos. You know how when you post something on Facebook(an update, a video, a picture), people can comment on it? Well – that’s the essence of Twitter. People post comments/updates/links and you reply to them, use them to start discussions, just read and ignore them or post something yourself.

So, here’s "How You Twitter". Get yourself a Twitter account and log-in. Then go to use the search button on the right side to search for something you’re interested in. For example, suppose you love chatting about politics, you love talk radio and you like to post links to political sites and news stories.

Search for something like "Obama bail-out". What you’ll get back is a list of people and what they’ve written about "Obama bail-out". Click on the pictures of the people who are making these comments and press their "follow" button under their picture. Press the back button, go back to the search results and do that for EVERYONE that looks interesting. Now you’re following a bunch of people who like chatting about the same thing you do.

Now, go back to Twitter.com and press Home. You’ll see that you’re now "following" X number of people and you have 0 followers. When you are following someone, you get to see everything that they write (AKA tweet). And you can comment back to them, just like on Facebook. When you want to comment on something someone says, type @theirname and then type your message. From this you’ll start a conversation.

To start your own conversation, just type updates. For instance "I just read How To Twitter on EzineArticles, if you’re new you should read it. Go to (and post this url)" That could be your 1st tweet. When people come to this site and read it, they’ll likely send you a comment back, like "that article was O.K. but here’s a link to a better article. . . " Now you’ve just made a connection with someone regarding "things to learn about twitter".

A lot of people then follow the people who are following them, so you’ll start to amass followers right away. These people can see exactly what you write – and they’ll comment on it. When you see people show up in the column that says "followers", consider clicking on their picture and following them back. You’ll see what they write and they’ll see what you write.

Now if you have no interests, and like chatting with friends – then stick with Facebook. If you have a hobby, an interest, like to chat, have something to sell, need to find a job – Twitter is for you. You could easily be following 500 people in a couple hours on Twitter and learning lots of stuff about your ‘niche’, meeting new people, or just finding a new outlet for your creativity.

This is the simple process I used to get 10,000 followers within a month!Twitter is an incredible way to get traffic to your site(s), network, stay in contact with your friends and family and even make new friends.

Getting Started: What to do first…

Before you even get followers, you need to make sure that you setup your account correctly, so that you get the most traffic to your website(s).

Step 1. The very first thing you need to do is setup your online bio its under settings and put your website URL on that settings page too as well as a picture of your face.

Step 2. When most people start off in Twitter, each time they get a new follower they reply one by one thanking them for following them. You dont need to do that. Use this: TweetLater.com is a service for Twitter. When someone follows you, TweetLater.com will send them a direct message, with whatever you want.

So in this message, thank them for following you, but also include a link to your website asking them to check it out. If you can, give them a free gift to join your list. With TweetLater.com you can also automatically auto follow the people that follow you if youd like and un-follow those who don’t follow you. Thats what I do.

How to Get Twitter Followers:

A lot of people dont know where to start when it comes to how to get twitter followers. Ill give you some simple tips that I used to get over 10,000 twitter followers within a month!

#1. The number one most easy way to get twitter followers is to simply follow others! Seems simple, yet not many people are doing it. All you do is search Twitter for the gurus in your niche, and follow the people that are following them. The gurus in your niche should have the bulk of your target market, thats why I say to follow their followers.

You can follow a max of 1,000 people so split that up and follow other gurus followers too. Not just one guru. That will give you more of a wider net to make sure you get the market youre looking for.

After you follow 1,000 people, those people will want to know who you are, so make sure you put your website URL in your profile. That will send free traffic to your website.

Now wait about 48 hours to give the people you followed a chance to start following you. You should get about 50%! Now go to: Twitter Karma and un-follow everyone who is NOT following you. And repeat the step above to get more followers.

#2. Go to GFfaster.com and use that application. You will get your own URL to promote. Promote your link everyday with different tweets. Place it in your bio for at least 1 month.

#3. Include a link to Twitter in all emails you send out to your list. At the end of the email, just say Follow me on Twitter with your link.

Twitter was founded by Evan Williams, who is no rookie to bringing creative ideas to multi-million dollar reality. Evan was a blogging pioneer and has created & grown web properties that have attracted the attention of the big dogs, including Google.

One of Evan’s past web projects grew to be so huge, in fact, that Google bought him out for a multi million dollar price tag.

Rather than reclining on a beach chair & sipping Coronas for the remainder of his life, Evan decided to try his hand again, when he thought up the concept of "micro-blogging."

In all our modern day internet hustle & bustle there’s come a need for brevity… short, to the point, yet meaningful messages.

Be careful not to come off as too spammy by including links in every Tweet… get involved with the Twitter community and share some of your daily activities with your followers so you can get a real feel for what it’s all about before sucking traffic out… its got to be a give-give relationship!

Now, to really get yourself on the fast track and start adding new followers fast, the best advice is to follow people who you find interesting, and single out those who already have a large followership. Tweet regularly and often using your mobile, the Twitter site, and even handy third party applications like "Twhirl."

Anytime you see a new Tweet from someone you are following send them an @reply by including the "@" sign + their Twitter username in a message responding to their original tweet.

By sending users an @reply you’ll get their attention, strike up conversations, and best of all – put yourself in the public spotlight so that all of their followers will take notice of you.

Before you know it, you’ll be addicted to Twitter and will have a massive followership as well!

What Is Really Twitter?

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a "red hot" new messaging service sweeping the planet called Twitter. What’s Twitter?

Twitter is a free messaging service. Its been described as a micro-Blogging platform. Speaking in layman’s terms, it means you can send a text message (SMS length) either through a website, instant messenger or mobile device to your own customized Twitter page. From there you can add friends (similar to MySpace) who are also using Twitter.

Twitter has also been described as web-based chat. Because similar to Instant Messenger (IM), you have instantaneous communication to a group of people in a short form message.

However, out of all the descriptions I’ve heard about Twitter, this one from Rick McCharles Blog is the one I like best:

"Twitter, in a nutshell, is mobile social software that lets you broadcast and receive short messages within your social network. – mostly made up of mundane messages in answer to the question, "what are you doing?"

Here’s how Twitter describes their service:

"Twitter is for staying in touch and keeping up with friends no matter where you are or what you’re doing. For some friends you might want instant mobile updatesfor others, you can just check the web. Invite your friends to Twitter and decide how connected you want you to be."

How does Twitter work?

When you send in a mobile text (SMS), Twitter sends it out to your group of friends and posts it to your Twitter page. Your friends might not have phone alerts turned on so they may check your web page instead. Likewise, you receive your friends mobile updates on your phone.

So, what’s the point of Twitter?

Basically, it’s to let people know what you are doing now…right this minute.

For example, if I were a Twitter subscriber and you were on my friends list, I would send you a message telling you I’m writing an interesting article about Twitter right now.

So how did Twitter come about?

Well, according to information on their website, Twitter was born as an interesting side project within the offices of Odeo.com in March of 2006.

Twitter is part of the Obvious Corporation in San Francisco, California.

Is Twitter a fad?

Some people think Twitter is nothing but a fad. However, those same people said the same thing about Blogs.

Here’s what I think:

The networking and sharing ideas aspect of Twitter are obvious. However, Twitter could have a significant relevancy to marketing. For example, product reviews, surveys, contest announcements and much, much more.

And no one can deny that Twitter is a fast, easy and convenient way to stay in touch and discover the latest trends.

Fad? No. I think Twitter is here to stay.

How Twitter Can Make You Filthy Rich

Ever heard of the up and coming social networking site twitter? I bet you have. You may even already own an account, along with several people you know. What if I tell you that you could make a lot of money just by sitting at your laptop for half an hour a day.

We all know that more often than not these kind of schemes rarely work, and when they do you barely make any money at all… WRONG!

How to Subscribe to Twitter RSS Feed

RSS is short for "Really Simple Syndication." This is a simple online mechanism that permits you to read all your favorite web content on one page. For example, consider a blog that you like. You would like to visit it everyday to see if the blogger has updated it. You can simply subscribe to the RSS feed of that blog and read the blog contents on your RSS feeder.

Subscribing to RSS feeds enables you to find out whether a blog or website has been updated or not without having to visit it. You can read the contents of several blogs and websites from a common page.

Twitter’s RSS Feed
Twitter’s profile page, home page, replies page, and public timeline page have RSS feeds. When you are viewing one of these pages, you might have noticed RSS buttons in the page’s sidebar or browser. If you want to track the contents of the page without having the sign in to Twitter every now and then, you can just subscribe to their RSS feeds.

Twitterfeed

Twitter does not have any application enabling users to update their tweets through an RSS feed. However, smart API users have designed an app called Twitterfeed. This app automatically sends any update you make on your blog to Twitter. All you have to do is enter your blog’s feed url, input the number of times you tweet. Your Twitter friends will be able to view these announcements. You can access Twitterfeed at twitterfeed.com

Twitter RSS Feed

Would you like to read the updates on Twitter without logging in? Then you want to subscribe to Twitter’s RSS feed. Check the sidebar of a public profile page on Twitter. You will soon locate the RSS feed button just beneath the pictures of the Twitter users you are following. Now, click on the button and subscribe to it and soon you will be able to read the latest updates on a feed reader without having to log into Twitter.

Your browser’s url field also has the RSS feed button. When you click on this icon,   you  will be asked to subscribe to this feed. Click on the subscribe button, and you will be able to read all the updates in your feed reader.

Public Twitter Pages

Public Twitter pages, for example a public profile page, can be accessed even by people who do not have Twitter accounts. They simply have to subscribe to the page’s RSS feed and read the updates on their feed reader. In order to respond, however, they need to create a Twitter account.

Auto Direct Message Or Not Auto Direct Message

One of the neatest things about Twitter is that it is easy to automate many functions. One of the most misunderstood and misused functions on Twitter is the direct message. There are third party services that let you automatically message people that sign up to follow you on Twitter, I do not believe that you should auto direct message people when they follow you.

Let me say, that I used to auto-message people when they followed me back in my early days on Twitter. I thought that a quick welcome message was a good thing. Over my time on Twitter, I’ve learned that a quick, personal welcome message is a good thing, a quick automated and therefore not personal message is not.

Look, I don’t mind someone sending me a personal direct message.

I’ve gone through the trouble of looking at their profile, and determining if I should use one of my allotted follow slots on them, and I appreciate that they’ve taken the time to look at my profile, follow me, and then send me a message. I love that, I feel that making these types of connections are what twitter is all about.

What I hate, and I recommend you stay away from, are automated messages telling me how to "get more than 16,000 followers in the next 90 days" or "buy my thing-a-ma-bob, it’s great!" or the dreaded "here’s my free gift to you" type messages.

By the way, if you have less than 10,000 followers you have no credibility trying to push a product on me that shows me how to get more than 10,000 followers. It tells me, among other things, that you don’t use the product yourself, or the product doesn’t work.

Another thing that’s annoying about auto-messages: A lot of people have direct messages forwarded to their cell phones, and using up my allotment of text messages on automatic direct messages irks me. I’m sure that it irks other people too.

There are only so many times that anyone can get the same canned message about 16,000 followers, or about your book, or your gift or whatever. Seriously, I want to know more about you before I buy anything from you.

Hopefully, you’ll get to know more about me and you’ll figure out what to sell me. I’m not saying don’t sell on twitter. I’m saying find out what my needs are, and then offer me something that could meet my needs.

Twitter is a global cocktail party thrown by regular people. It’s not a global infomercial.

Now, I’m going to talk about the misuse of Twitter, the misuse of twitter tools to be exact. There is some software that let you automate your tweet. Well, a lot of people use this kind of software to pretend friendly which is actually good but they are using it the wrong way or maybe the worst way.

What I’m talking about is they are abusing twitter using the tools; all they are twittering about is sales, sales, and sales. Some even use automated Direct Messages to instantly message you when you follow them. Now let me show you how to not twitter your account to dead with messages will look like this:

2. Hi there, do you want to make money online? This is the best marketing system ever. Don’t believe it, just see it. (Another stupid looking link)

Now I was using that kind of way to market my business too which is absolutely wrong, and I changed. Some of you may be doing that kind of way too, but you’re reading this article which makes you better because you found a way to change and you want to change. Just take a look at the twitter tips I provided using twitter tools to automate your message and tweet but better:

Just be patient, continue to build trust & communication in your followers. Time will come that the things you give to your followers will return to you.What you sow is what you reap.

After that follow people in your niche. Its advisable that you must follow people who are in the same industry as you. Build a relationship to them, befriend them. Study how they use twitter. Check out also the people that they are following. If you are in affiliate marketing or network marketing, follow heavy hitters & add their followers. Constantly check out their tweets and just copy how they do it. Also run searches on people related to different business niches, or any other niche you want to target.

 Is Twitter Taking Over Sport?

Players have been tweeting their every move at Wimbledon – an Andy Murray-Roger Federer final would be a tennis techie nerd’s paradise

The first week of Wimbledon has been notable, not just for the discovery that British tennis players aren’t actually very good, but also for the prominence of Twitter, the internet-based personal gossip page. Plucky, spunky, not-very-good Brit Anne Keothavong offered analysis of her first-round collapse via Twitter.

Serena Williams has been tweeting magisterially throughout. And it turns out tennis is ripe for Twitter, providing a perfect storm of lonely people with laptops sitting around in hotel rooms and the compulsive Mrs-Bennet-from-Pride-and Prejudice-style gossip-wittering of Wimbledon itself.

Twitter’s rise is usually accompanied by warnings about the death of other forms of communication. Not the kind you might like to see disappear, like men complaining about things on the internet, the overly elaborate faux-Rasta handshake, or awkward office banter where nobody really knows when to stop until there’s a pause and someone says "Right …" and just sort of walks off.

Usually it’s the death of newspapers that gets fingered. And perhaps the Twittering of Wimbledon does signify the end of certain bits in papers, chiefly the celebrity sports person interview where either (a) a cheeky chap asks what brand of marmalade a famous snooker player likes or if he’s ever found a dead fly in his sock draw; or (b) a heavily-eyebrowed uber-hack tries to "really get" some ball-whumper or racket-flailer by asking questions about their childhood, using long words and having a chin-stroking byline photo.

We can get rid of all that now. We no longer need the words "Andy Murray was promoting Cheez-Gon inner soles, the world’s leading foot-shaped fungicidal plastic." Twitter offers you famous sports people unmediated by the usual guff-filter. This is the Proustian inner music of Peter Crouch, the kind of thing Peter Crouch might blurt out if you shook him awake roughly in the middle of the night, only compacted into 140 characters and with lots of LOLCUL8ER-type stuff.

Being famous is a vital part of the process. I know this because I’m also on Twitter. For a while I’ve had an urge to blurt things out about cricket. I thought I could Twitter phrases like "What more does Kabir Ali have to do?" or "Where’s the depth in the top order?" rather than shouting them out on the bus, or at the chair where my wife used to sit.

But it turns out it’s not that easy. You have to be famous for your off-the-cuff banalities to become even vaguely interesting. So it’s also important to get the real Twitterer. The Murray one is definitely Murray, nicely sarky and wry. There’s a touching real Wayne Rooney, where he bangs on about Coleen a lot. And an unintentionally devastating fake David Beckham who says things like "I have so many tattoos" and who has about a billion followers.

Twitter is thrillingly intimate, but I have hopes for the future too. Perhaps we could find a way of communicating exactly what Phil Neville smells like, how it feels to hug Steve Harmison, how often Joleon Lescott thinks about death, or the sensation of being jostled by Kelly Sotherton.

For now let’s hope Murray gets to the final and plays Roger Federer, who this week fielded a barrage of questions about the fact he personally updates his Facebook page ("I like to interact"). A match made in tennis-nerd heaven.

You can create a service based on the information you have received. You can offer a teleseminar on a topic that your target market is interested in.

– Build Your List. I am sure that you know that the bigger your list, the more successful your business is. Use Twitter to build your list by sharing information about your free gift and your newsletter with your followers. Don’t promote your newsletter and your free gift all the time, but it’s perfectly fine to mention your offers from time to time.

– Build Relationships With People You Meet On Twitter. People buy from people they know, like and trust. Don’t just promote yourself all the time. Get to know your contacts and they will get to know you.

For example, on Twitter, spend 80-90% of your twits to help others, share useful content and network. Limit promotion to 10-20% of the time. When you do this, more people will follow you and more people will want to get to know you, which will translate into more subscribers over time.

– Blog And Share Your Blog Posts On Twitter. Sharing your blog posts is another great way to demonstrate your expertise to your target market. And you don’t even have to share your posts manually. There are tools that will automatically check your blog and post your blog post to Twitter automatically.

All you need to do is to set it up and your blog posts will be shared with your followers every time you have a new blog post.

– Offer Events And Teleseminars. A great way to invite more people to your list is to offer an event and invite your Twitter contacts to join you for the event.

For one of the seemingly stupidest ideas ever released on the general web population, Twitter surprisingly now has an effective way of making you money that is truly an automated stream of cash for those in the know.

If you do a search on making money with twitter and you will come up with a range of ideas including Twitter applications and some being a touch more novel than others which could prove to be somewhat useful for making a little extra cash. But what if you are thinking about making big money with Twitter, do really think something like a limited 140 character blog post or tweet could ever achieve this?

The answer to that question lies in a system I discovered this week. Before I tell what it is, I will explain what you can do with this Twitter system, that should have even the mildest tweeter interested.

For starters, the big hassle with Twitter is, it takes time to tweet or post an update and time is one thing that is universally in short supply.

Secondly, finding the right folks interested in my topic or business is a hassle because you can’t search on Twitter like you can search in Google for instance.

To top it all off, how could I possibly sell anything to these people even if I could find them, connect with them by updating regularly?

The answer lies with a system developed by a mild mannered geek by the name of Bill Crosby, no not the actor but the professional monopoly playing Bill Crosby. Well at least that is what his Twitter profile claims.

I met up with Bill’s system only a few days ago and when my Twitter account of about 12 months of age, had about 100 followers and about 100 people were following me. You know how it goes, you get an email from Twitter that tells you someone new is following you and think OK, they seem nice and interesting so I will follow them back. Hey every now and then you tweet about something and so it goes. Twittering in a fairly aimless manner wondering how all these people you are following have managed to get thousands of followers while you only have not much more than a few dozen. You begin to wonder, what are they all doing that I am not?

I happened to find a link in one of the direct messages from someone I had connected with on Twitter that had a small link to Bills website, where I saw his Twitter auto pilot video. It all sounded too good to be true, automatic Twitter, set it and forge 1000 t it. Wow I thought, finally someone speaking my language. An automated Twitter system that would find highly targeted Twitter friends, follow them, have them follow me back and the best part was yet to come. Automated, on topic highly targeted updates. I thought, no way, this can’t happen. How? Well it is true. I will tell where I am up to now, just 4 short days later.

As of July 1, I now have 1,268 people I am following with 654 people following me. I have produced 122 updates and the best part is, no sooner had I set this up and running did I have a new business enquiry from someone interested in my services. They had clicked my website link, browsed my pages and decided to contact me with the prospect of buying from me. Wow again! I couldn’t believe it, less then one hour after setting Twitter on to auto pilot did I have a meaningful contact from a potential customer. What they were interested in was a product worth about $4,000 to my business.

I had been on Twitter for over a year and not much had happened, as I wasn’t sure what to do with it. As I said in the beginning, Twitter seemed the stupidest idea I had ever come across so I did nothing with it.

The automated Twitter system that Bill showed me how to do, only took an hour to set up. His instructions where easy to follow video guides, with a backup checklist. Everything is covered, although a couple of the sites had been updated since he made the video back in April. Still I managed to figure things out and kept going to great success. He claims to be able to get you about 15,000 followers in 90 days and with 500 extra followers I have gotten in just 4 days I am set to end up with about 45,000 followers by the end of 90 days.

Now the really cool thing is, no matter if you haven’t got a business to promote, you can make money by sharing the idea with other people who follow you. Bill makes this really easy to do. I will say that it does require you doing a little maintenance (takes about 2 minutes) a couple of times a week but it seems that this a fair trade for something so time saving.

So there you have it, a simple, easy to set and forget Twitter on auto pilot system that helps you make money in a couple of ways and at the very least frees you from the burden that Twitter once threatened us all with, namely robbing us of even more of our precious time. That is now a thing of the past, thanks to the Twitter auto pilot system from Bill.

By the way, I did upgrade one of the accounts that Bill will send you to, but it is not necessary to do so, as once you pay the small price for his system there is nothing else you need to spend, just a little time setting it up. I hope you find it as time liberating as I have.

Social Media For Small Business – How to Use Twitter For Your …

Following up from the last set of Social Media Marketing webinars where we covered the basics of Twitter and other Social Media tools and sites, I have been getting questions about using Twitter for business purposes. In response to those questions, I wanted to write out a short list of Twitter for Business best practices and some of the most popular tools that make these practices possible.

This list of tools, techniques, and what is possible is changing and expanding almost daily with the explosion of Twitter usage and discussions of Twitter merging with some other site/partner. Thus I expect to stay current on using Twitter for business purposes we will need to repost more on this topic from time to time.

Be Real (don’t hide) -

It is important that you completely fill in the registration and profile information when signing up on Twitter. If you set up your Twitter Id as a business name it is less real than using a personal name. If you still want the business name in there, you could possibly add the company after the persons name (like Dell computer has been known to do with names like "PatrickAtDell"). In the profile section, post your website. I wouldn’t recommend a short URL here if you can avoid it since this is your brand and the full link helps in your SEO rankings. Also in the profile section you enter in relevant search terms in your profile description.

With the profile bio limited to 160 characters, you want to get the relevant keywords included. By doing so you don’t have much space to talk about the business specifically. However you can also squeeze in more content about your business including other websites, urls, logos, or content by uploading a custom Twitter background. Be aware though that the search engines and tools people are using to find you will not pick up words or content located in the background image. That’s why the keywords have to be in your description.

Finally and possibly most important is that you need to upload a picture. People want to see who they are communicating with, even if you are representing a company. If Twitters don’t think you are real, they are less likely to be interested in following you and learning more about your business (we are Twittering for Business here remember). If you try to hide with no picture, just a logo, an incomplete profile or no description, the cynical side of social media marketing will take over, people will assume the worst and they won’t follow you.

Participate (be Relevant, contribute, share, respond) -

For a business or business person to be relevant in the Twitter conversation going on, they need to participate. Ask questions and elicit responses. Respond to other user’s questions. Tweet not only your own relevant contributions but retweet (RT) other Tweets that you find valuable. Promote and/or attribute others where there’s a reason to do so. You can build a following faster if you appear trust worthy (easiest way to do that is by actually being trustworthy), know your subject matter and don’t look like you are just out the get them to buy something.

The graders and ranking sites look at both your following as well as your activity. There’s a number of search tools that will help you here to see who is talking about what and who is specifically responding to you (for example with @replies). These tools can help you determine where you might want to jump into a conversation and build that relevance. This is important in being noticed by searches from other users. You build following with contribution, relevance, and responsiveness.

The number of keywords in your tweet cloud is also important. Are you an active Tweeter? If so, what are you tweeting about? Are you relatively consistent in what you discuss? There’s a big difference between using Twitter like text messaging and blogging each trip to the grocery store and using Twitter for business with a targeted, specific approach to your online identity and the topics you take on. Again, the grading web sites will pick up on this targeted approach and quickly move you to "elite" status in your chosen keywords if you Tweet with some forethought.

Automate (where possible) -

Reduce the time it takes you to research what is happening in the Twitterdom, speed up your own Tweeting, get yourself followed automatically, and build ranking faster and easier. There are several automation type tools available to help build your Twitter for business presence without having to hire a back room full of people:

–TweetBeep -Set up alerts for various keywords, people, different attitudes, and links.

–Summize (Twitter Search) – Search for your keywords, click a button and you have a custom RSS feed that you can read via your favorite feed reader, or put on your Google or Yahoo home page. A synopsis available on what’s happening.

–Tweetlater – one of the more versatile tools related to Twitter. A quick list of services include; emailing a digest of Tweets (like TweetBeep), Pre-scheduling tweets to keep your tweet stream flowing, pre-saving Tweets or common snippets of tweets for faster Tweeting, Automating direct messages to people that follow you, and managing multiple Twitter Ids at the same time.

–Twitscoop – extends what Twitter Search can do with both real-time searches of specific keywords as well as what the overall Twitterdom is talking about using (the Tweet Cloud). It also shows you the hot trends in the cloud.

–Twellow – This is another research tool that extends Twitter for business use, Twellow searches people’s profiles or what they are Tweeting about under specific, predefined categories, or a general search. Twellow will also show you geographically where people are Tweeting from in the US and Canada.

Social Media For Small Business – How to Use Twitter For Your …

Following up from the last set of Social Media Marketing webinars where we covered the basics of Twitter and other Social Media tools and sites, I have been getting questions about using Twitter for business purposes. In response to those questions, I wanted to write out a short list of Twitter for Business best practices and some of the most popular tools that make these practices possible.

This list of tools, techniques, and what is possible is changing and expanding almost daily with the explosion of Twitter usage and discussions of Twitter merging with some other site/partner. Thus I expect to stay current on using Twitter for business purposes we will need to repost more on this topic from time to time.

Be Real (don’t hide) -

It is important that you completely fill in the registration and profile information when signing up on Twitter. If you set up your Twitter Id as a business name it is less real than using a personal name. If you still want the business name in there, you could possibly add the company after the persons name (like Dell computer has been known to do with names like "PatrickAtDell"). In the profile section, post your website. I wouldn’t recommend a short URL here if you can avoid it since this is your brand and the full link helps in your SEO rankings. Also in the profile section you enter in relevant search terms in your profile description.

With the profile bio limited to 160 characters, you want to get the relevant keywords included. By doing so you don’t have much space to talk about the business specifically. However you can also squeeze in more content about your business including other websites, urls, logos, or content by uploading a custom Twitter background. Be aware though that the search engines and tools people are using to find you will not pick up words or content located in the background image. That’s why the keywords have to be in your description.

Finally and possibly most important is that you need to upload a picture. People want to see who they are communicating with, even if you are representing a company. If Twitters don’t think you are real, they are less likely to be interested in following you and learning more about your business (we are Twittering for Business here remember). If you try to hide with no picture, just a logo, an incomplete profile or no description, the cynical side of social media marketing will take over, people will assume the worst and they won’t follow you.

Participate (be Relevant, contribute, share, respond) -

For a business or business person to be relevant in the Twitter conversation going on, they need to participate. Ask questions and elicit responses. Respond to other user’s questions. Tweet not only your own relevant contributions but retweet (RT) other Tweets that you find valuable. Promote and/or attribute others where there’s a reason to do so. You can build a following faster if you appear trust worthy (easiest way to do that is by actually being trustworthy), know your subject matter and don’t look like you are just out the get them to buy something.

The graders and ranking sites look at both your following as well as your activity. There’s a number of search tools that will help you here to see who is talking about what and who is specifically responding to you (for example with @replies). These tools can help you determine where you might want to jump into a conversation and build that relevance. This is important in being noticed by searches from other users. You build following with contribution, relevance, and responsiveness.

The number of keywords in your tweet cloud is also important. Are you an active Tweeter? If so, what are you tweeting about? Are you relatively consistent in what you discuss? There’s a big difference between using Twitter like text messaging and blogging each trip to the grocery store and using Twitter for business with a targeted, specific approach to your online identity and the topics you take on. Again, the grading web sites will pick up on this targeted approach and quickly move you to "elite" status in your chosen keywords if you Tweet with some forethought.

Automate (where possible) -

Reduce the time it takes you to research what is happening in the Twitterdom, speed up your own Tweeting, get yourself followed automatically, and build ranking faster and easier. There are several automation type tools available to help build your Twitter for business presence without having to hire a back room full of people:

–TweetBeep -Set up alerts for various keywords, people, different attitudes, and links.

–Summize (Twitter Search) – Search for your keywords, click a button and you have a custom RSS feed that you can read via your favorite feed reader, or put on your Google or Yahoo home page. A synopsis available on what’s happening.

–Tweetlater – one of the more versatile tools related to Twitter. A quick list of services include; emailing a digest of Tweets (like TweetBeep), Pre-scheduling tweets to keep your tweet stream flowing, pre-saving Tweets or common snippets of tweets for faster Tweeting, Automating direct messages to people that follow you, and managing multiple Twitter Ids at the same time.

–Twitscoop – extends what Twitter Search can do with both real-time searches of specific keywords as well as what the overall Twitterdom is talking about using (the Tweet Cloud). It also shows you the hot trends in the cloud.

–Twellow – This is another research tool that extends Twitter for business use, Twellow searches people’s profiles or what they are Tweeting about under specific, predefined categories, or a general search. Twellow will also show you geographically where people are Tweeting from in the US and Canada.

Twitterquette: Rules of Conduct on Twitter

A few dos and don’ts are necessary to learn if you are going to have followers on Twitter.

What are you doing? That is the question on all Twitter users’ minds as they ponder how to use their 140 characters. If you have a Twitter account, or are planning to get one, consider avoiding a few faux pas. Proper Twitter etiquette, or what I call Twitterquette, can cause you to get, and retain followers. If you make certain mistakes, users can un-follow you just the same.

Your Twitter Account

The first rule is to have a purpose for your Tweets. People join Twitter for different reasons, so it is important to establish why you joined. Whether your reason is to connect with friends and family or to network for business purposes, make it clear.

There are a variety of reasons why people use Twitter. These include micro-blogging, news updates, job searching, interviewing, connecting with family and friends, announcements, promotion, charity and more.

This brings me to the next rule, which is to have separate accounts if you have multiple purposes. Your friends and family may not care about the latest news in your industry and your business followers do not care what you had for dinner. Separate business from everything else, please.

Also, remember that it is okay to un-follow people. It isn’t necessary to follow everyone that follows you. It’s okay; believe me.

What not to do on Twitter

Avoid Tweeting while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Just don’t do it.

Don’t use @ to have a back and forth conversation with a single user. That is what Direct Messages are for.

Do not Tweet more than four times an hour. It takes away from other users’ Tweets.

Please don’t use DM to spam people. This is probably the fastest way to chase followers away or get reported for abuse.

Don’t get too personal. Sexuality and bodily functions should be kept to yourself. Young teens and elderly people use Twitter, too, so be respectful.

Using profanity is not appropriate either.

Following people that you don’t know for no reason is creepy. Only follow users that line up with your purpose for joining Twitter.

Tips for a healthy Twitter Following

Post useful information. Interesting quotes and links to helpful and relevant blog posts, videos, articles and websites can attract a following. Your eating habits, the weather and what time you go to bed may not be that useful to others.

Be helpful to others. There is nothing wrong with posting links to your own content, but not all of your Tweets should be self-promotional.

Be unique. You can get really creative with your 140 characters. Be yourself and do your best to make people think.

Show appreciation for your followers. Send a DM to new followers and thank them for the follow. (Again, don’t spam them, just say "thanks.")

Post often. A few times a day is necessary if you want more people to read your Tweets. Remember, there are a lot of other people Tweeting, so you have to keep up with it if you want a following.

Keep a close ratio of the number of people your are following to the number of people following you. Spammers will sometimes follow a lot of Tweeters but not many will follow them.

Are you on Twitter? Do you wish that people pay more attention to you on Twitter? This is a obvious question because we all seem to be lost in the millions who have joined Twitter.

It becomes frustrating when we find that nobody is following us. It is more frustrating to know that all our posts are going unread by our potential target group.

This is more true for those who wish to market their product and services. What is the way out of this when all of us are competing against each other to catch eyeballs? You can do one thing immediately and add a background to your profile to differentiate yourself.

How backgrounds help improve your page?

Every twitter page looks the same. They all look like newspaper columns. To bring out your page in focus what should you do? Add something like a background that catches immediate attention. You have choices of adding different designs. You can use backgrounds where you add your photograph with text. That will become your headline. Words like- informative, funny, witty, lovely etc. will immediately catch attention of members.

Selecting the picture -

Take care in selecting your picture. What personality does your picture convey? Please remember that we judge others by their pictures and we will also be judged by our picture. If your profile is business oriented your picture should not convey any insincerity, or other expressions that convey wrong meaning. The first rule therefore is selecting a right picture.

Selecting the background -

The second factor is choice of background. You will surely not choose a dull background if you want to discuss love and love poetry? Similarly you will not use hearts on a profile talking about technology. In my opinion the best backgrounds are with a neutral theme such as retro lines or polka dots that can be used by anyone. If you want to create a definite impression, select the background with the end result in mind.

Use proper words to go along with your picture. Upload your picture. Select a background. Browse the picture and add words. Save the generated background and change it on your profile on Twitter. Good luck with your new look twitter page with a new background.
